The Chukotka Autonomous Area is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making
part of the Far Eastern Federal District. It is located in the most
northeasterly region of Russia and occupies the Chukchi Peninsula, the adjacent
part of the continent, and a number of islands, including Wrangel Island, Ayon
Island and Big Diomede Island. Chukotka’s administrative center is Anadyr, founded
in 1889. Most of its area is above the Arctic Circle. Chukotka's natural
resources include noble and ferrous metals, bituminous coal, lignite, oil and gas. The autonomous area’s economy relies on its natural resources. The
main local industries are deer farming, fishery, hunting and fur farming. In
2004, natural system of Wrangel Island Reserve was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
