The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation
making part of the Far Eastern Federal District. It is located in the north of Eastern
Siberia. The capital of the republic is Yakutsk, founded in 1632. Sakha is well-endowed
with unique nature resources. Sakha possesses over 80% of the known diamond
deposits and over 20% of the known gold deposits in Russia, as well as enormous
reserves of tin, bituminous coal, gas, tungsten, polymetallic and iron ores. The
largest industries in the republic are mining, non-ferrous metallurgy, electric
power industry, fuel industry, timber and woodworking industries. The main local
industries are dairy and meat farming, as well as cattle farming (with its own
rare native horse breed – Yakutian horse), deer farming, fur farming, and
fishing. Hunting and fur trade are developed in the northern parts of the
republic. There are over 700 lakes in the republic. The Republic of Sakha is
home to two large nature reserves: Olyokma Nature Reserve and Lena Delta Nature
Reserve.
