The Trans-Baikal Territory is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Far Eastern Federal District. Its administrative center is Chita, founded in 1653.
The Udokan mine, Russia’s largest copper mine is located in the Trans-Baikal
Territory. The leading industry is mining, the territory has deposits of gold, molybdenum,
tin, lead-zinc ores and coal. The Trans-Baikal Territory is the main uranium
ore supplier for the Russian nuclear industry. Ferrous metallurgy, machine
building, timber and woodworking industries, light industry and food industry are
well-developed in the territory. The electric power industry relies on the Chita
Coal Power Plant and the Kharanorsk Power Plant. There are many large lakes, including
Big Leprindo, Leprindokan, Nichatka, Kenon, Barun-Torey and Zun-Torey. The
territory is famous for its nature reserves, including Daursky Nature Reserve and
Sokhondo Nature Reserve.
