The Kamchatka Territory is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Far
Eastern Federal District. Its administrative center is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky,
founded in 1740. The territory has deposits of copper and nickel (Shanuch), mercury ores and alluvial platinum (Olyutor), titanium-magnetic
sands (Khalaktyrskoe), gold (Ametistovoe, Rodnikovoe, Aginskoe, Ozernovskoe). Kamchatka
has a huge hydropower potential, with its geography providing opportunities
for building run-of-the-river hydroelectric power stations, tidal power stations and geothermal power stations.The largest industries in the Kamchatka
Territory are food industry, electric power industry,non-ferrous metallurgy. The
main local industries are animal husbandry and fur trade. The peninsula hosts large
fleet bases of the Russian Pacific Fleet. Kamchatka belongs to the unique zone of
volcanic activity, there are about 300 large and medium-sized volcanoes, 29 of
them are active, including the largest volcano in Eurasia – Kluchevskaya
(altitude 4,750 meters). There are also five conservation areas, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
