The Kirov Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Volga Federal District. It is located in the east of European Russia. Its administrative center is Kirov, founded in 1374. Vyatsko-Kama,
Europe’s largest deposit of phosphate rock is situated in the region, as well as
deposits of peat and mineral water. The largest industries in the Kirov Region are
machine building, chemicals, food industry and timber industry. The region is among
the top-ten in Russia in the production of timber, chemicals, petrochemicals. The
main branch of agriculture is animal husbandry, represented by cattle farming
involving raising livestock for meat and dairy products. Agricultural sector
specializes in the cultivation of cereal crops (rye and coarse grain crops), potatoes,
linen, vegetables. The region is home to Nurgush Nature Reserve, created in
1994; it covers an area of 5,900 ha. There are also numerous historical
monuments dating from the 18th to the 19th centuries. The
most important are the Assumption Cathedral of the Trifonov monastery in Kirov,
the Annunciation Cathedral and the Trinity bell-tower in the town of Yaransk, the
cathedral complex in the settlement of Lalsk, St. Nicolas Church in the town of
Vyatskie Polyany.
