The Nizhny Novgorod Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the
Volga Federal District. It is located in the central part of European Russia. Its administrative center
is Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1221. The region is gifted with such mineral resources
as halite, construction materials, gypsum, anhydrite, peat.
There are also known occurrences of ferrous (copper, lead, zinc) and rare
metals. The largest industries in the Nizhny Novgorod Region are machine
building and metalworking, food industry, chemicals. Agriculture has no
particular specialization, with both crop farming and animal husbandry being
equally well-developed. Livestock breeding is widespread (there are over 50 breeding
farms). The region is home to Kerzhinsky Nature Reserve.
