Chemical industry of the Russian Federation includes 20 sub-sectors and produces approximately 16,000 types of products. In total about 7.6 thousand of large-scale chemical production plants are currently counted in the territory of the state.
Fossil fuels (natural gas and oil) are the main raw materials for chemical production. In this regard the major enterprises are usually located along gas and oil pipelines. Not only proximity to raw materials but also consumer orientation is taken into consideration. The largest centers for the production of nitrogen fertilizers are situated in Kemerovo, Lipetsk, phosphate fertilizers – in Leningrad region, Togliatti, Samara district. Potassium fertilizers are produced directly at the raw material extraction locations: Berezniki, Solikamsk.
The contemporary market of chemical products has adapted to ever-changing consumer likes; the quality of basic products has increased by an order of magnitude. Many manufacturers have made considerable progress in the production of equipment due to ever-increasing requirements of state surveillance and consumers themselves for the products. All this leads to constant changes in production not only at the state level but also in the international field.
