Import substitution in Russia is substitution of goods imported to Russia by domestically produced goods. The focus on import substitution has been declared in Russia since 2014 subsequent to introduction of mutual sanctions by Russia and the Western countries. The decision on establishment of the Government Committee for Import Substitution was made at the meeting of the Government of the Russian Federation on the 4th of August, 2015. In 2015 266 billion RUR were allocated to agricultural product import substitution projects from the federal budget.
The Russian production has become competitive. Textile manufacturers are developing their production facilities and expanding the assortment (fabrics and non-woven materials, fibers). Prohibition of foodstuff import became a significant incentive and a favorable condition for the Russian agriculture developing quite successfully as it was for the last decade. The share of imported foodstuff in Russia had fallen to a record low by August, 2016.
